Because of another’s negligence, you received burns from toxic chemicals, electricity or heat. To build your personal injury case, you want to learn more about your treatment options.

WebMD breaks down burn treatment options. Understand how to recover and protect your right to fair compensation.

First- and second-degree burns

Doctors use an antibiotic ointment, aloe vera and other skincare products for first-degree burns. Doctors often recommend acetaminophen for pain. Second-degree burn victims receive creams and ointments.

Third- and fourth-degree burns

Intravenous antibiotics and other intensive treatments prevent third-degree burn infection. Victims who lost skin may need IV fluids to maintain their fluid levels, synthetic skin or a skin graft.

Burn difficulties

If a personal injury results in a major burn, get medical attention sooner rather than later. Burn treatments help prevent and address complications. Such complications include infection getting into the blood and causing sepsis, and tetanus when bacteria seeps into open wounds and causes disease. Untreated burns may also lead to a deadly loss of fluids, such as blood, and a drastic drop in body temperature. Additional complications include breathing difficulties caused by breathing hot air or smoke and joint and bone problems because of scar tissue.

Burn pain

Burn victims may experience intense and ongoing pain. Shifting patterns, special characteristics and other factors often complicate treating burn pain. Burn treatment may trigger pain while cleaning wounds and changing dressings. Those with intense burns could require aggressive pain treatments.

Burn treatment costs affect your personal injury suit. Reviewing your options with your medical team helps you navigate your claim and understand your legal options.
