3 Ways to check in with family members at a nursing home

As loved ones age, you may need to place them into a care home for their well-being. Well-run care facilities offer safety and comfort to those who no longer possess the ability to live alone.

While great comfort and care are the best-case scenarios after transitioning a loved one to a nursing home, you should check in on them frequently and ensure they are safe and well-treated.

1. Note staff behavior

When you visit your loved one, keep an eye on the behavior of the staff. Do they wash their hands before interacting with residents? Do they act politely? While staff may act their best when visitors arrive, the way they conduct themselves still sheds light on how the nursing home runs typically.

2. Watch for signs of physical abuse

Some of the most apparent and worrisome signs that your loved one’s situation is unsafe, bruises, scratches or injuries indicate serious problems. Accidents happen, but if the nursing home staff lacks a clear or believable explanation for an injury, it may be a sign of deeper issues.

3. Keep an eye on accounts and documents

Not all abuse involves physical violence. Watch for any suspicious activity related to your loved one’s finances. Red flags include missing money or credit cards, new names listed under bank accounts, or unexplained withdrawals on records.

Moving a loved one to a nursing home may be the best decision for their well-being. By checking in with them regularly you can help ensure they are receiving the proper care and safety they deserve.
